Unexpected Discoveries - Homemade Things from Fruit

This weekend I went to a birthday party for a two year old.  His mother, one of my oldest friends - Shelia - has a little bit of a creative thumb.  Now, if you are handy with a knife you might want to take note.

The Theme: Luau

Item #1

This might look like an ordinary pineapple...but you know I wouldn't be blogging about it if it was only an ordinary pineapple.

That's because inside this pineapple is a jar of dip.

It's simple.  Get a pineapple.  Cut off part of the pineapple leaving the leaves and about an inch, an inch and a half of pineapple.  And remove the insides.  Don't be wasteful.  Use the pineapple.  It's really good raw or grilled or in a fruit salad.

Item #2

I shall call him Sharkie.  Why?  Because that's the first thing I thought of just right now.

He is a carved watermelon.  Obviously.  He also has some Swedish Fish as his food.  Or for the evil humans to eat.

Once again, cut off part of the watermelon, this time the bottom.  You want him to be able to not roll around the table.  Cut out a wedge for the mouth.  Hollow out the inside, once again using the fruit in a fruit salad. (I don't think grilled watermelon would work that well, but I challenge you if you dare.)  Get a small knife and create his teeth.  Use the parts of the green rind to create his fins and attach using toothpicks.  Use toothpicks to insert his blueberry eyes.  Garish with candy fish because the real thing would kind of mess things up and would attract more flies.  Unless you cooked the fish, then they would just a bit soggy.

Most important, keep this thing, and any other watermelon creations cool.  They will wilt as evidenced by Sharkie later in the afternoon (no pictures taken, sorry).

Would I make a watermelon creation?  Probably not.  Why?  Possibly because of my irrational fear of knives.

If you really want to get technical, google the instructions and you can find many watermelon, and probably other melon, creations.  I know Shelia said she made a watermelon baby carriage once.

Now, here's a picture of the lake, just because I like taking pictures of random lakes and trees.
